ANCHOR + EXTENSION | GALLERY FOR DIA DE LOS METROS

Before beginning the project, I was given two criteria with which to examine and draw inspiration from for the design: bone morphology and geology. The criteria, loosely related to the buildings role in celebrating the art and culture of Dia De Los Muertos,  influenced the structural detail of the space as well as its sunken procession, both of which attempt to provide a desirable space for showcasing art as well as mimic the emotional weight of the cultural celebration. The roofs design focuses on mimicking the spines ability to move and support itself, the movement of which allows for a controllable aperture that can adjust throughout the day. The roof plane gradually lifts up to allow more light into the space and represents one of the cultural events guiding values; the souls rise into the afterlife.
