HYBRID BUILDING | URBAN PARK & LIVING

The design for this project developed as a result of two critical rules issued at the beginning of the project: the program had to include 12 apartments with one commercial kitchen, and the design had to start as a 65’ by 65’ by 65’ cube. To begin, a mental map was created from memory of the area with an actual map and detailed site analysis of the location layered on top. A series of common mental nodes, pathways and edges were exposed, showcasing the ways individuals traversed the area, as well as a lack of connectivity between commercial, residential, and green spaces. To address these factors a series of operative moves were preformed and the cube was divided up and lofted to create a ground floor green space that could collect storm water, and a raised collection of both apartments, commercial kitchen spaces, and public and private viewing decks. Within the design, residents can enjoy private living and public spaces within proximity to each other, and the community at large receives a lush public space amongst the dense urban environment.
